When you enter data, Numbers automatically recognizes what you put in a cell and formats it appropriately. For example, if you enter '$100', Numbers automatically formats the cell for currency and uses the Numeric Keyboard when you edit the cell.

If you want to change the format of a cell, tap the cell that you want to edit, tap the Format button , then tap Format. Tap a format to apply it to the cell, or tap the More Info button to see the details of a format.

When humans do data entry, errors are therefore expected. Unfortunately, data entry errors can have devastating effects on research results. Simple data entry errors – such as typing an incorrect number, typing a number twice, or skipping a line – can ruin the results of a statistical analysis. Manual data entry can require less up front investment, education and allows for easier oversight of data that is not easily categorized by machines. Nonetheless, manual data processing is also more prone to error, slower than its automated counterpart, and requires more time and expense on labor.
